Online networking.

Long considered the domain of introverts and biz owners who couldn’t find a sitter…

Now, for all of us, it’s simply how we’re doing networking these days!

And no matter how you feel about it, the fact remains:

Online networking is a powerful way to build your business.

But only if you use it wisely!

Read on for 3 tips to help you make every online networking opportunity work for you:

1) Clarify your online presence.

To get the most out of each online networking opportunity, you’ll want to start at the end.

What’s the goal of networking?

To bring in new prospective clients, patients, or customers?

To develop relationships with potential professional allies and referral sources?

Both? Something else entirely?

No matter what your goal is, sooner or later, the folks you’re networking with will make their way to one (or more) of your online homes:

What will they see when they land there?

TRY THIS:

Review each place your business currently is represented online, and consider:

ready to attract more of the right people to your business?

YES, PLEASE!

2) Think creatively about your network.

If you’ve been with me awhile, I’m guessing this won’t shock you:

I’m really into words.

And “networking” is one of those words that just makes me feel… some type of way, as the young people say.

I hear “networking” and I think starched collars.

Pockets stuffed with business cards.

Sweaty plastic cups of warm pinot grigio balancing on cocktail napkins while eyes dart nervously around the room.

At least, that’s what I used to think.

Happily, I’ve been proven more and more wrong about networking with each thoughtfully organized event I’ve attended.

And what’s more:

I’ve learned just how valuable these opportunities can be… if you only allow them to be.

At its core, networking is simply about relationships.

Let go of the pressure to “move your business forward” or “generate leads” and suddenly each networking event becomes an opportunity to connect with other humans. Other persons.

Inter-personal.

And that, my friend, is where you shine.

So, then the question becomes:

Who do you want to build a relationship with?

Simple as that.

TRY THIS:

Seek out (or create your own!) online networking opportunities with the following people:

  • peers / colleagues / people (local + remote to you) who do the same kind of work you do (i.e., your biz buddies
  • professional partners who serve your dream client in a complementary (but different) way than you do (i.e., your referral sources + biz buddies)
  • business owners with expertise that develops/strengthens your business (i.e., your educators/mentors + biz buddies)

It doesn’t have to be a formal “event” either. DM them on Instagram, suggest a virtual co-working sesh… whatever you like!

3) Build authentic connections through generosity.

So, you’ve checked to make sure your online presence is clear + consistent…

You’ve booked a virtual coffee date, co-working session, or community training

Now, it’s time for the most important (+ most FUN) part of online networking:

You’re going to build authentic relationships by practicing generosity.

Once you’ve broken the ice and shown genuine interest by asking some good, open-ended questions…

It’s only a matter of time before your new networking buddy starts talking about something their struggling with.

Maybe it’s a slower pace of new client inquiries.

Or a question they haven’t been able to answer for one of their patients.

Maybe it’s a nagging feeling of worry, fatigue, or impending burnout.

Your job?

To listen closely to your networking buddy’s struggle as you silently let the wheels start turning…

How can you help?

Try not to think about income. Or a future favor. Or reciprocation of any kind.

Just ask yourself how you might be able to help right now.

Is there a link to a resource you can share?

A person they should be in touch with?

A simple clarification, shortcut, or encouragement you can provide?

And when the answer dawns on you, by all means, share it!

It’s easier than ever to help each other out right now. Because we’re already connected online.

THIS is online networking, friend.

(No cocktail napkins required.)

TRY THIS:

  • Listen carefully for areas where your online networking buddies are getting stuck.
  • Brainstorm some creative solutions you can provide or suggest to them.
  • Choose 1 of those solutions + offer it up to them!

want a schedule filled with dream clients?

YES, PLEASE!

Let’s take action!

OK, here’s your action step for today:

  • Choose an online networking opportunity + commit to it! Then, follow the tips above to make it work for you!

Cheering you on!
