And because I really don’t want to contribute to any literal or figurative clutter in your life…

Now, I talk all the time about making sure your copy is CLEAR.

As in, written with the goal of being understood by your dream client.

And I stand by that recommendation, always! Clarity is one of the essential pillars of good copywriting, no question.

But, even the most clearly-written copy is useless if it can’t be accessed by the reader.

It’s so frustrating to see a health/wellness business owner pour time + effort into crafting a thoughtful message for their dream client… only to have that message completely lost because it wasn’t accessible.

Some common reasons this might happen:

  • Your copy is too hard to locate.
  • Your text is too small to read.
  • Your message is impossible to hear.

These seemingly minor oversights can result in a missed opportunity to communicate with your people.

Simply put, if your dream client can’t access your copy, then your message won’t connect.

So, if you do nothing else with your writing all year, I’d like you to make this one copy commitment, and improve the accessibility of your message.

SOME QUESTIONS TO GET YOU STARTED:

  1. On your website/blog: Are there clear headers on each page? Do the design elements of your site augment + clarify your message… or obscure + distract from it? Is the size/style/weight of your main font readable?
  2. On your social media platforms: Are your name, handles, and bios clear + readable? Are there fonts or other stylistic elements that may be distracting from your message (e.g., listing yourself as a ♥ ♥ C O A C H ♥ ♥ vs. a coach )? Are your captions formatted for ease of reading (e.g., plenty of white space, brief paragraphs). 
  3. In your Instagram stories + other videos: Are you communicating your verbal message in writing, as well? Not only do captions expand your reach by making your videos accessible to members of the deaf community, but they also loop in the estimated minimum 30% of Instagram users who watch video content with the sound off. I’ve been using the app Clipomatic (currently $4.99 in Apple’s App Store) to create my Story captions, and have found it refreshingly accurate + easy to use!

Friend, this concept of making our message more accessible is a big one, and I’m looking forward to exploring it more with you in the future. But for now, I hope these suggestions will help inspire you to start making some changes.
