{ REFERRALS }

So, you want to encourage a steady stream of (dreamy) referrals…

(Who doesn’t?)

…but you’ve maxed out your ad budget.

(And paid ads have never seemed to bring the right people to you anyway…)

What’s a business owner to do?

In today’s post, I’m breaking down 3 places to focus your efforts to start generating referrals to your health/wellness business.

1) START AT HOME

…and by that, I mean your digital home.

First, take stock of your online assets:

  • your website
  • your LinkedIn bio
  • your professional directory profile(s)
  • your social media accounts

(And if you only have one or two of the above, don’t sweat it! We’re keeping things simple (and FREE) at this stage, remember?)

Next, review each of these places you currently have an online presence, and ask yourself:

The single most powerful way to draw the right people to your business is to put the words on your existing online platforms to work for you.

If you don’t like your answers to the questions above, pick 1 place to start improving your copy, and dive in! (Not sure where to start? I can help.)

2) BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

When’s the last time you reached out to your neighbors?

Your figurative neighbors, that is.

One of the best ways to expand your reach into new dream-client pools is to engage with your natural professional allies (i.e., potential referral sources).

These are the people who serve your dream client… but in a different way than you do.

They might be addressing the same struggle, but the solution they provide is distinct from yours.

And that’s a good thing!

For example, in my own therapy practice, I often help women navigate major life transitions + negotiate the demands of work, family, etc., and they typically come to me with challenges around anxiety and body image.

Some of my professional “neighbors,” then, might include:

  • ObGyns
  • personal trainers
  • nutritionists

But, I could also take it a step further and expand my circle of “neighbors” to include related professionals, like:

  • doulas, birthing coaches, lactation consultants, sleep training specialists…
  • massage therapists, acupuncturists, other body work specialists…
  • health coaches, etc. etc.

You get the picture.

So, the first step is to figure out who these people are in the case of you and your business.

Then, it’s time to get out there and start being a good neighbor!

  1. Reach out via email, phone, or social media.
  2. Introduce yourself + share a bit about what you do.
  3. Ask about them, what they do, and (VERY IMPORTANT) what they’re currently struggling with when it comes to helping their clients. Listen carefully for a need that you might be able to meet.
  4. Offer a solution to meet a need they’re seeing in their clients.

I’ve had a lot of success using this approach in my own practice.

By listening to one personal trainer share her frustration helping clients who seem to struggle with taking her guidance to unhealthy extremes, I was able to create a simple fact sheet on signs that may signal a need for psychological support.

By listening to an ObGyn share her difficulty providing comprehensive follow-up care to new moms experiencing overwhelm, I was able to create a quick screener for postpartum anxiety.

In each case, by thinking reciprocally, I was able to quickly and inexpensively (i.e., for FREE) provide my professional neighbors with a tool to better serve their clients. And they’ve become some of my most enthusiastic sources of referrals ever since!

3) HELP NEW FRIENDS FIND YOU

My last bit of advice here is short + sweet.

And that’s because seeking out new sources of (dreamy) referrals doesn’t have to be complicated!

Sure, you could:

  • guest post on a blog with impressive reach
  • book speaking engagements at events in your field
  • host informational sessions in your local area

These are all great ways to get your name out there!

But one of the simplest ways to help new sources of referrals seek you out is to use Help a Reporter Out (HARO)

This free tool connects members of the news media with experts (like you!) who can share their expertise on a given topic in exchange for free publicity.

Not familiar with HARO yet? Check out this excellent guide to making it work for you.

LET’S TAKE ACTION!

OK, here’s your action step for today:

  • Pick 1 of the ideas above (e.g., home, neighbors, new friends) + commit to trying it out this week! (Be sure to share your commitment in the comments below, so we can encourage you!)

Cheering you on!
