Today I’m talking about the power of CONTENT marketing, and 7 reasons it’s the absolute best way to drive quality traffic to your business:

SO, WHAT IS CONTENT MARKETING?

Simply put, content marketing is creating + sharing valuable, original content for your dream clients.

It’s used different ways by different businesses, but here’s my take on what makes content marketing as effective as possible:

  • It’s original (i.e., created by you)
  • It’s valuable to your dream client (i.e., it addresses their primary struggle(s))
  • It’s actionable (i.e., it can be put to practical use right away)
  • It’s FREE (i.e., you’re sharing it, not trying to sell anything)

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be walking you through the process of brainstorming, planning, and creating useful, actionable, FREE content for your dream clients.

But, today I want to help you get really clear about exactly what content marketing can do for your business.

WHAT’S YOUR STARTING POINT?

Now, you likely fall into one of 2 categories:

1) You haven’t started creating content yet. This might be because you don’t think it’s necessary, or perhaps you’re just not sure what kind of content to create.

OR

2) You’re already creating content, but it’s not as effective as it could be.

Either way, I’m talking to you!

If you haven’t started creating content, I hope to convince you why you should start, and help you begin thinking through which type to create.

And if you’ve already been creating content for awhile, I hope this post helps you re-evaluate WHY you’re creating content, and to start tweaking that content to be as effective as possible.

WHY CONTENT MARKETING IS SO POWERFUL

1. Content marketing gives you a platform 

…that YOU control, allowing you to showcase the very best of what you have to offer.

2. Content marketing humanizes your business

… letting you tell your brand story in your own voice.

3. Content marketing establishes credibility

…and builds your KNOW-LIKE-TRUST status in your dream client’s eyes.

4. Content marketing gets you involved

…by making it easy to contribute meaningfully to ongoing conversations in your field, and address current, relevant issues for your audience in real time.

5. Content marketing facilitates engagement

…between you and the very folks you’re trying to reach.

6. Content marketing yields insights into your dream clients

…both on the front end (e.g., their comments, likes, shares) AND on the backend (through any analytics you track on your website or social media accounts).

7. Content marketing helps you set clients up for success

…by providing them with valuable, free content that educates, encourages, and empowers them before they even become paying clients!

And that last one (#7) is the real key here, because it results in one of two outcomes for your dream client:

Either they’ll only consume your free content, and you’ll have changed their lives for the better. Or they’ll realize: If her FREE stuff is this valuable, imagine what her PAID offerings could do for me!

WHAT TYPE OF CONTENT SHOULD YOU CREATE?

As long as it meets the criteria for “effective” (i.e., original + valuable + actionable + FREE), your content can take just about whatever form you wish!

Blog posts
Scripted videos (e.g., YouTube, IGTV)
Live videos (e.g., FB, Instagram)
Podcasts
Micro-blogging (e.g., social media posts + captions)

…just about anything!

Personally, in my own therapy practice, I’m a fan of blogging + micro-blogging.

That’s because blogging:

  • serves up content that my dream clients value, in a format they can easily use + share
  • fuels SEO + boosts my site’s search rankings, which helps dream clients find me
  • offers a big return on my time + effort, as written content is a format that I truly enjoy creating + comes relatively easily to me

Not sure what type of content to create for your dream clients?

I recommend considering the following questions:

  • What is my dream client struggling with?
  • Where are they currently searching for help with this?
  • Which format am I most comfortable with (e.g., writing, video, speaking, interviews, something else)?
  • What is the most valuable information I have to share with my dream client?
  • What is the most obvious way to share that information?

The answers to those questions should lead you right to the best type of content to start creating!
