HOW TO BRAINSTORM CONTENT IDEAS

TRUSTED BY

Last week, we kicked off of our 3-part series all about content creation.

Next week, I’ll be walking you through the process of filling your calendar with a YEAR’s worth of useful, actionable, FREE content for your dream clients.

(Yes, you read that correctly. :))

But there’s one crucial step we need to talk about first.

Today we’re talking about the importance of sitting down to brainstorm content ideas before you create even a speck of content, and the top questions I use to generate a TON of inspiration:

BUT, FIRST, A QUICK RECAP:

You know that content marketing is all about creating + sharing content that your dream clients will value.

You also know that in order to meet the highest standard, that content needs to be:

  • original (i.e., created by you)
  • valuable to your dream client (i.e., it addresses their primary struggle(s))
  • actionable (i.e., it can be put to practical use right away)
  • and FREE (i.e., you’re sharing it, not trying to sell anything)

And, finally, after last week’s post on content marketing, you also know just what type of content you should be creating for your dream client.

If you haven’t yet completed the exercise in that post, I highly recommend you pause here, go through it right now, and then come meet me back here.

Go ahead! I’ll wait. 😉

So, already, you might be thinking of potential topics for content you could create. But first things first…

We’ve got some brainstorming to do.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU BRAINSTORM CONTENT IDEAS

So, it’s no secret that it can feel a bit daunting when you first sit down to brainstorm content ideas for your blog, YouTube channel, or social media platforms.

Give yourself a break. You’re not trying to be Wikipedia.

Instead, I recommend you find a quiet spot where you can sit (without interruptions) and ask yourself the following questions to help you brainstorm content ideas.

Some of these questions are focused on YOU. Others are focused on your clients.

(And if you don’t yet have any clients, don’t worry! You can use what you know about the dream client you hope to attract, you can survey others in your field who are currently working with your dream client… or you can do both! The goal is to set aside some time to brainstorm content ideas. It’ll pay off, I promise.)

ABOUT YOU

  • What attracted you to this work in the first place? What keeps you doing this work?
  • What concepts/skills did you struggle with most when you were learning/training?
  • What do you wish your dream client knew/understood about you?
  • What do you love most about your work? What challenges you most?
  • What are your biggest concerns for your clients? What do you wish for them?
  • Which topics/aspects of your work really light you up + give you energy?
  • What books/songs/movies/memes have resonated with the work you do, or helped you see your work differently?

ABOUT YOUR CLIENTS

  • What is your dream client like?
  • What questions are you asked by clients most often?
  • What are your clients’ biggest frustrations?
  • What (issues/concepts/habits/changes) do your clients tend to struggle with most?
  • What do your clients worry about most? What keeps them up at night?
  • What do your clients want most?
  • What are some hesitations clients may have about working with you? What info + reassurance do they need?
  • What do you wish your clients knew before you started working together?
  • What do your clients need to know in order to work with you successfully?
  • What skills do your clients need to have in order to be successful in your work together?
  • What concepts/topics in your field are most confusing for clients?
  • What are the biggest public myths/misconceptions in your field?
  • What confusion do you wish you could clear up for clients, once and for all?
  • What terms are your clients likely entering in a Google search?
  • What sites/resources/products come up in your clients’ typical Google searches?
  • What are the hot topics in your field right now? What are your clients most likely seeing in the news?
  • What topics should your clients know at least something about?
  • What key topics should your clients know a lot about?
  • What has helped your former clients enjoy success in your work together?
  • What examples/illustrations/analogies have been most helpful to your clients
  • What do your clients talk about in their intake paperwork/appointment/interview/session?
  • What do your former clients talk about in their reviews/testimonials/feedback/exit interview/termination session?
  • What information/concepts/skills/outcomes do your clients find most surprising?
  • What are some of your former clients’ greatest success stories?

LET’S TAKE ACTION!

OK, here’s your action step for today:

  • I want you to find a quiet place where you can sit (uninterrupted), and go through each of the questions above. Write down your answers with actual pen and paper. Some of your responses may be brief. Others will open the floodgates and you won’t be able to write fast enough. Then, when you’re done, read through your answers and just let them sink in for awhile.

By the time you’ve taken this important step to brainstorm content ideas, you’ll have more content inspiration than you know what to do with! But don’t worry… Next week, I’ll be walking you through the process of creating a YEAR’s worth of content for your dream client!

‘Til then… I’ll be cheering you on!
