The 3-step recipe that'll yield a year's worth of post ideas

You’ve been kicking this can down the road for weeks now.

You’re a smart cookie. So, why is this so damn hard?

What to write?

What to @%&-ing write?!

I get it.

Running a business is hard work. The last thing you need is one more task on your (ever-growing) To Do list.

But when it comes to building a thriving health + wellness business, content creation needs to be a priority.

The good news? It’s a whole lot easier than you think!

Believe it or not, you already have everything you need to generate an entire YEAR’s worth of blog content ideas.

(Yes, you read that correctly!)

Coming up with blog content ideas for your business:

  • is (way) easier than you think
  • won’t become a(nother) full-time job. (I promise.)
  • can actually be… {gasp}… FUN

In fact, if you start today, you’ll have an entire YEAR’S worth of post ideas before you can say, “writer’s block”.

THE 3-STEP RECIPE

[IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m using the term “blog content” in this post 1) for simplicity’s sake, and 2) because I believe blogging is one of the most powerful forms of content marketing out there. HOWEVER, you can easily apply this same recipe to video content, podcasts, or whatever medium you prefer!]

Coming up with blog content ideas is so easy you can do it (almost) without even trying.

Check out this simple formula:

topic x format = blog content idea

STEP 1: Pick a TOPIC for your post.

This’ll depend on your specific business.

(More on that in a minute.)

For the sake of our demonstration here, let’s say you’re in the business of helping folks improve their sleep…

STEP 2: Choose a FORMAT for your post.

Maybe it’s “common myths debunked” or “go-to resources” or the universally-beloved “listicle” (e.g., “5 reasons why…”, “Top 10 mistakes…”, “3 ways to…”).

Totally up to you.

But, for the sake of our example, let’s go with… “3 easy tricks…”.

Pairing this format with the topic above yields:

“3 Easy Tricks to Help You Fall Asleep Tonight.”

(BOOM. See how simple it was to create a single post idea?)

Now, the real magic begins with…

STEP 3:  Create multiple formats and multiple topics, and then start mixing ’em all up like the creative genius you are!

Ready to give it a try…?


STEP 1: TOPIC

First, you’ll need to read through all the potential content topics you could cover and choose a handful of favorites.

And thanks to the brainstorming you’ve already done, you should have more topics than you know what to do with!

I recommend choosing your top 5 to 10 topics to start with.

In my own practice, this list might include things like:

anxiety
body image
mindfulness
healthy communication
life transitions

But it’s really important to make this your own by tailoring it to the topics YOUR dream client will find most valuable!

STEP 2: FORMAT

The key to generating a solid list of blog content formats is to begin by asking yourself:

What is the goal?

Most successful formats are designed to educate and/or solve a problem for your dream clients, to instill a sense of hope about whatever issue they’re facing, and to help them get to know you, like you, and trust you.

When in doubt, keep it simple. Humans crave order + clear “take-away” messages. When it comes to blog post formats, lists are your new best friend.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

STEP 3: COMBO

Now comes the fun part.

You know that list of topics you drafted, based on the questions you asked yourself?

Pull it up.

And that list of formats I started above (and hopefully you continued)?

Pull that up, too.

It’s time to start combining items from the two lists to generate some sweet post ideas!

  • If spreadsheets are your style… you might want to drop your lists into Excel + go from there. (I suggest listing your formats in the first column on the left, listing your topics across the top from left to right, and then filling in your post ideas for each combo you can.)
  • If you’re more of a free spirit, you might prefer opening a blank notebook (or Word doc) and seeing which topic-format combos inspire you to start writing.

Keep working through your lists to create combos until you’ve got a starter set of about 50 post ideas.

Save the rest for later + keep adding to your lists as blog content inspiration strikes!
